Through interactive online lessons and a unique pen-pal experience, Konnect is creating opportunities for young learners in Kibera to explore new interests, express themselves and connect with the wider world.

Learning can be much more exciting when children are given the freedom to explore, ask questions and discover subjects that spark their curiosity. At Konnect, this belief is shaping an exciting community learning initiative that is connecting learners in Kibera with tutors based in China through interactive e-tutoring sessions and a pen-pal exchange programme.

Hosted at the Kibera Kids Library, the initiative uses digital connectivity to bring international learning experiences closer to children within the community, opening up opportunities to explore knowledge beyond the traditional classroom.

One of the programme's most distinctive features is its learner-centred approach. Rather than having all topics predetermined, learners are invited to vote on the subjects they would most like to explore. Their choices help shape upcoming lessons, giving them an active role in their learning journey.

The proposed topics span a range of exciting areas, including robots and technology, music, places around the world, an introduction to engineering and its career opportunities, as well as environmental preservation, waste management and good hygiene practices.

This approach makes learning more engaging by allowing children to follow their interests while discovering new ideas, practical knowledge and possible future career paths.

Beyond the virtual classroom, the programme also introduces learners to a pen-pal experience designed to strengthen their written English, confidence and self-expression.

As part of this exchange, learners are given thought-provoking questions that encourage them to reflect on their personal interests, daily routines, ambitions and the things they would love to learn. Each learner responds to one selected question in at least ten English sentences, with their written responses shared with the tutors in China ahead of subsequent lessons.

Through this exercise, learners get an opportunity to practise writing, organise their thoughts and share something about their lives with people from a different part of the world. It also creates room for meaningful conversations and cultural exchange, helping them appreciate different perspectives and experiences.

For Konnect, the initiative represents the power of connectivity when it is combined with purposeful learning. By bringing together community learning spaces, international volunteer tutors and curious young minds, the programme demonstrates how the internet can become a gateway to knowledge, creativity and global connection.

As the sessions continue, the ambition is to nurture confidence, self esteem, curiosity and expressiveness among learners who are not only gaining knowledge but also discovering their interests, developing essential skills and building connections beyond their immediate environment.

Because education should not be limited by geography, and a child's opportunity to explore the world should not be determined by where they grow up.
