Konnect Brings Kung Fu to Kibera, Creating a Space for Children to Learn, Grow and Thrive
In the heart of Kibera, school-going children now have a new opportunity to learn, stay active and build confidence through Kung Fu. Konnect has launched a weekly Kung Fu programme at Becky’s School Centre, creating a safe and engaging space where children can discover the benefits of martial arts while developing skills that extend beyond the training floor.
The programme currently brings together 30 school-going children, who meet once per week from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Each session gives the children an opportunity to stay physically active, learn new techniques and enjoy a structured activity in an environment that encourages participation, discipline and teamwork.
Kung Fu is more than a martial art. For children, regular practice can help build concentration, coordination, patience and perseverance. As they learn new movements and techniques, they are also encouraged to develop self-discipline, respect for others and the confidence to keep going even when something feels challenging.Overally, the kungfu will also go along way in ensuring their fitness and healthy life.
At Becky’s School Centre, the sessions are designed to make learning both meaningful and enjoyable. Children get the opportunity to learn at their own pace, interact with their peers and develop their abilities through regular practice. The programme provides an alternative avenue for children to spend their co-curricular time productively while discovering new interests and talents.
The initiative is part of Konnect’s broader commitment to supporting communities beyond Internet connectivity. While reliable internet access remains central to what Konnect provides, the company continues to explore programmes that respond to the wider needs and aspirations of the communities it serves, particularly initiatives that create opportunities for children to learn, connect and develop.
Becky’s School Centre provides a welcoming environment for the programme and offers a convenient space within the community where children can participate in the sessions.
The partnership also reflects the value of working with local institutions to create programmes that are accessible to the people they are intended to benefit.
For children, taking part once every week is an opportunity to learn something new, challenge themselves and have fun with their peers. With every session, they are not only developing their Kung Fu skills but also building habits and qualities that can support them in school, at home and in their everyday lives.
As the programme continues, Konnect hopes to keep creating meaningful opportunities that encourage children to explore their potential. The Kung Fu sessions are a starting point for nurturing healthy lifestyles, positive engagement and personal development among children within the Kibera community.
