Konnect Water Joins Roysambu in Commemorating the Day of the African Child 2026
Every year on 16th June, Africa pauses to commemorate the Day of the African Child, a day set aside to honor the courage and sacrifice of the students who lost their lives during the 1976 Soweto Uprising in South Africa while advocating for their right to quality education and dignity. The day also serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility to create environments where children can learn, grow, and realize their full potential.
This year, the Day of the African Child was commemorated under the theme, "Ensuring Universal Access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) for Every Child in Africa." The theme highlighted the importance of safe water and proper sanitation as fundamental building blocks for children's health, education, and overall wellbeing.
In Roysambu Sub-County, the celebrations were held at Mahiga Primary School in Kahawa West and brought together hundreds of learners, teachers, government officials, community leaders, and development partners in a vibrant child-led event. Through performances, presentations, and discussions, children took center stage in advocating for their rights and sharing their aspirations for a healthier and more inclusive future.
Recognizing the direct alignment between the event theme and its mission, Konnect Water partnered with the Roysambu Sub-County Children's Office to support the celebrations through a practical community impact activation focused on safe drinking water access. The initiative reflected Konnect Water's commitment to promoting clean, safe, healthy, and affordable water within the communities it serves.
As part of the activation, Konnect Water established hydration stations within the event grounds, ensuring that children and stakeholders had access to safe drinking water throughout the day's activities. The stations were designed to be child-friendly, allowing learners to participate in a supervised and organized manner while reinforcing the importance of hydration and healthy living.
To promote hygiene and safety, learners were encouraged to use their personal water bottles, while disposable tumblers were provided as a contingency for those who did not have one. The water was dispensed through manual pumps, helping to maintain hygiene standards and ensuring a smooth and continuous flow of service during the event.
Beyond quenching thirst, the activation also served as an opportunity to reinforce awareness around the importance of safe water access. Access to clean drinking water remains a critical issue for many communities, and initiatives such as the Day of the African Child provide valuable opportunities to educate and inspire action around sustainable WASH practices.
The success of the activation was made possible through collaboration between the Roysambu Sub-County Children's Office, participating schools, community volunteers, partners, and the Konnect Water team. This collective effort demonstrated the power of partnerships in delivering meaningful impact to children and communities.
